Portrait 11: chin chin

Chin detail. I like the soft gradients you get on the neck and collarbones. I paint cropped details of the face and neck to emphasize these features, with noe eyes or gaze to focus on, the eyes gets drawn to the less obvious but no less beautiful features of the human body.

Mixed media on canvas
Acrylics, collage and acrylic inks
30x30cm (4cm deep)

The plan: create 4 closeups of faces, picking different crops and features for all of them in a series. This enables me to practice really subtle skin tones and features, as very the smallest  details will matter.

What did I learn:

  • Cropped areas of the face is fine, and can be interesting. However, it can’t be too simple. I had to add some hair, to make the side of the face not seem too flat. I will try to choose photo references with more interesting light, color and details for the next ones.
  • Painting hair: start big, work down to the tiniest brushes. Layer upon layer.
