Creative workshop
I was fortunate to be asked to hold a workshop for Måløy kunstlag members. It was a weekend of learning monotype and object print, from free exploration to working on creating direction through reflection and peer feedback.
Didactive reflections: In a workshop like this, some needed a lot of freedom, some needed to model a technique in order to go home with a piece to be proud of. The need for a split between an advance course with more experimenting and a beginner course with more structure and templates were things I learnt from this workshop.
We worked through several monotype methods, like subtractive, additive ways of making marks, to tracing and stencil making. We also explored form with Matisse collage and division form exercises. It was a lot to cover over just 2 days, but the ladies were engaged, curious and brought along their own ways of solving the challenges I gave them
It resulted in 2 group works and a chosen individual piece, and also plenty of monotype explorations. I learnt a lot from these creators, how different we work with shapes and curiosity. I was impressed to see that the finished works all had very unique expressions. To make something authentic when you have just learnt a new skill is a lot harder then it can sound, as you still haven’t fully mastered the tools and methods. This comes only through practice, and takes time. So well done girls!
As mentioned in the initial didactic reflections in this text, should not take for granted that the participants have learnt the methods this first time. En example: I spent some time preparing and cutting frames for the final exhibition part, this i should have prepared beforehand, and instead walk around the students, offering help where i saw it necessary, specially if there were beginners.
