Goldfinch

Goldfinch

Acrylics on canvas, 40cm x 40cm

During a dark and wet February, I found solace in studying this little Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis). My longing for spring seems apparent in the bright colors, especially the white, airy blossom surrounding the bird.

I was greatly inspired by Japanese woodprint designs, with large areas of pure or gradient colour, thin and delicate line work and bright colours contrasting the soft background. I could swipe through thousands of these on pinterest if I had the time, but deciced to try my own interpretation instead.

What did I learn?

I managed to make extra delicate thin lines, by leading the paintbrush away form the line direction, and making the paint thinner and more runny with water. I also had to hold my breath!

Doing some research on different image styles can lend fresh new (old) style to my paintings.
